Transcranial magnetic stimulation is safe and easy to tolerate. Because it is a drug-free and non-invasive depression treatment, TMS therapy doesn’t have the side effects that are often associated with antidepressant medication.
The most common side effect associated with TMS therapy is temporary discomfort at or near the treatment site during treatment. This typically occurs only during the first week of treatment.
During treatment, you may feel a light tapping on your head and hear clicking sounds. These come from the magnetic coil that one of our TMS technicians rests gently on your head during the 18 to 19 minutes session.
In clinical trials, fewer than 5% of patients discontinued treatment with TMS therapy due to adverse events.
TMS therapy should not be used for patients who have non-removable conductive metal or stimulator implants in or near the head, or patients who have active or inactive implants, such as deep brain stimulators, cochlear implants, and vagus nerve stimulators.
