The most common side effect is temporary discomfort at or near the treatment site while treatment is happening. This usually goes away after the first week of treatment.

Most people who have TMS therapy feel their mood begin to improve after two to three weeks of treatment. Some feel changes even sooner.

Although the effects of TMS last a long time, some patients occasionally need booster treatments to stay free from depression. Everyone’s schedule of booster treatments is different, but they’re generally only a few consecutive sessions a year. Your maintenance schedule will depend on your own needs and situation. Your psychiatrist or nurse practitioner will schedule them for you, if necessary.

TMS therapy can be an appropriate treatment for most people with depression. The exception is people who have any kind of non-removable metal in their head. If you have any of the following, you may not be able to receive TMS therapy:

• A medical device, such as a cochlear implant or a vagus nerve or deep brain stimulator
• Bullets or shrapnel
• A facial tattoo with magnetic or metallic ink
  Some dental work (Most work is acceptable.)
