Dr. James Winston, MD graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of North Carolina. He is Board-certified in psychiatry and is founder and medical director of American Behavioral Clinics, where he is committed to providing patients with expanded access to psychiatric and behavioral health care. He started American Behavioral Clinics Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) as an alternative to hospitalization. Dr. Winston has held medical director positions at First Hospital, Greenbriar Hospital, and Charter Hospital.
A professor at Rush University, Dr. Winston has also been a national lecturer to psychiatrists and family practice doctors. In 2004, Dr. Winston was featured in Milwaukee Magazine. He has been voted a top doctor by his peers and featured in Milwaukee Magazine’s Top Doctors issue every year from 2004 to 2012.
Dr. Winston looks at each of his patients as a whole, from a medical and a psychiatric point of view. Through thorough assessments of his patients, Dr. Winston has detected brain tumors, adrenal insufficiencies, diabetes, thyroid disorders, B12 deficiencies, hyper-thyroid disorders, and anemia as medical causes of altered mood states.
As a general psychiatrist, Dr. Winston works with adults and adolescents. He has been treating bipolar, depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse disorders for 30 years.
